Many of you know that the interior designers at JASON BALL interiors participated in this year's Serving Up Style: Designers Fighting Lupus design competition. This event is Portland's premier interior design event bringing 20 design teams together to create dining environments of all shapes and sizes. Last year the JBi team put together a more conceptual room focusing on showing materials in different forms (see details here). Designing a room for a competition is what I call "designing in a bubble." We really never know what the judges will use as their criteria. So, what do we do - we design a room that we love, with all the details and design elements that we feel make a great show room. Our design process took us all over the map, so to speak. Some of our initial concepts were conceptually crazy, and probably not even build-able, and some were just nice rooms. We ended up with a room that felt distinctly JBi in many of it's main design elements, but also met the requirements of being a show room with color, pattern, lighting and a certain level of "over the top-ness." Personally, I am extremely proud of what we accomplished in our room. It has many of the hallmarks of a JBi design - custom furniture, playing with color and pattern, incredible lighting and a refinement within the theme. So, without further ado, here is RetrØ12: Yesterday Once More.

While we didn't win any awards, we did exactly what we wanted and brought viewers back to a particular time in their lives. We overheard people say how much this room reminded them of their parents' (or aunt's or grandparents') house or how they had an avocado green princess phone or an Evel Knievel lunch box just like the one on the table or grew up in a kitchen with harvest gold appliances just like the one through the pass through.

More than anything, we were able to help show visitors have a great time and help raise awareness of lupus and the need for continued research to find a cure. And, isn't that what this is all about?
